In musical terms, the tonic tone is the first tone of the major/minor scale that identifies the key center. The tonic function is represented by the major/minor triad. A tonic tone acts as an undivided fundamental frequency whose subdivisions generate harmonic or concordant relationships with the tonic, or fundamental, tone. Harmonic functions are generated by the spacing of major and minor scale tones in major and minor third intervals. [Mark Rossi]
