The beginning. It’s not a moment inside time because time didn’t exist yet. Space didn’t exist yet. Energy and matter didn’t exist yet. Therefore no sequence, duration, or “before/after” relationship was possible. The beginning is a pre-cosmic condition. Which is a state in which none of the measurable quantities used physics (length, duration, energy, mass, motion) were present.
In the Christ Letters, this state is described as the Ultimate Universal Dimension of Consciousness. It’s a dimension that’s infinite without boundaries. It’s eternal outside of time. It’s unchanging in a state of equilibrium. It’s unformed containing no structures, and it’s silent and still containing no activity. The beginning should be explained as the condition before beginning itself existed.
Our universe is measured by time. The Christ Letters refer to something more fundamental than time. It describes this state with no motion, no change, no sequence, no entropy, no causality, and no physics at all. The pre-creation state isn’t an event. It’s a condition. It’s the ground state of all existence. It’s the base reality out of which the cosmos would later arise.
The state in which only the Ultimate Universal Dimension existed, before the emergent of the Universe = The Beginning.
Imagine an endless blank piece of paper, infinitely thick, infinitely long, infinitely wide. This is the best description I could come up with that helped me understand what this dimension is. [Libby Ferguson]
What is consciousness before matter? The first entity that existed was Consciousness. Matter, energy, physical law, and space-time exited AFTER this.
Some people are confused of the difference between Consciousness of the Ultimate Universal Dimension and human consciousness - they both aren’t the same thing. The Ultimate Universal Dimension is the origin from which all later forms of consciousness arise.
Consciousness doesn’t need a brain to exist. Before creation, there were no atoms, chemistry, biology, or neurons. Therefore, Consciousness can’t be defined as something produced by the brain. Instead, Consciousness is defined as the fundamental, non-material capacity for awareness, intention, and self-existent being, existing independently of any physical structure. This is Consciousness as the root of reality. It’s not an effect, but a cause. The Christ Letters describe it as pure Awareness, pure Intent, the Source of all Intelligence and Love, the Origin of all Impulse (activity and bonding), infinite, eternal, and, uncreated. This means Consciousness existed IN AND OF ITSELF BEFORE creation.
Consciousness is the substrate of reality. In physics, a substrate is something from which everything else is built. Before creation, Consciousness was the “substrate” out of which laws of physics, space-time, energy, matter, form, biological life, human intelligence, emotion, desire, intention, and relationships…would all eventually arise. In this pre-creation state, Consciousness is the only “thing” that exists. It’s not a floating mind, but the foundation of being.
The content of pre-material consciousness (the Ultimate Universal Dimension of Consciousness contains:
1. Awareness - It knows” itself, not through thought, but through pure being.
2. Intent - The inherent readiness to express Its nature. Intent is not movement. It’s “stored purpose-energy” in equilibrium.
3. Two primal impulses held in restraint.
- Universal Will (Intelligence) as the drive to move, act, expand.
- Universal Purpose (Love) as the drive to bond, form, nurture.
These exist as unexpressed potentials, not active forces.
4. Self-contained equilibrium. Nothing happens, moves, divides, unfolds. It’s perfect balance.
This is Consciousness before matter as a silent, infinite, self-aware field.
Why is Consciousness called “Universal?” It’s universal because it’s not local to any region, has no boundaries, fills all space, is all space, doesn’t depend on creation to exist, and creation depends on it to exist. It’s the “everywhere-ness” inside atoms and inside galaxies. It’s the invisible “background” that remains constant even when the universe expands. Thus, the Universal Dimension of Consciousness is the ground state of all existence.
Why does Consciousness come first? Because Consciousness can exist without matter. Matter can’t exist without Consciousness (because Consciousness provides the impulses that create matter). Physical laws require an underlying non-physical ordering principle. Creativity requires Intent, which can’t come from lifeless particles. Intelligence can’t arise from a universe with zero intelligence encoded into it. Therefore, Consciousness is the first cause. It can’t be created, produced, or emerge because it’s primary. Before anything existed, Consciousness existed. [Christs Letters]
