The Keely Motor Experts

NYT - PHILADELPHIA, April 7, 1888. - In pursuance of the decision rendered last Saturday by Judge Finletter in Court of Common Pleas in the equity proceedings against Inventor John W. Keely, a formal order was made to-day directing that Bennett C. Wilson, the plaintiff, his attorney, and four gentlemen named as experts, shall make a full and detailed inspection of the Keely motor, its mode of construction, and principle of operation within 30 days from to-day. The four men named at experts are Dr. Charles M. Cresson, Analytical Chemist of City and State Boards of Health; Thomas Shaw, mechanical engineer and inventor of pumping machinery; William D. Marks, civil engineer and Professor of Dynamical Engineering in the University of Pennsylvania, and Jacob Naylor, iron founder and President of the Eighth National Bank. The result of the inspection will be to keep inviolate a special clause setting out that the result shall only be made known to the effect whether or not the motor which inventor Keely is now working upon is the same apparatus that he is alleged to have assigned to Bennett C. Wilson in 1869. To this end the experts will continue themselves. Three of the experts are thoroughly scientific men, and the fourth has an extensive practical knowledge of iron work used in machinery. [The New York Times]

See Law Suit wherein Keely was sued by Bennett C. Wilson to reveal proprietary information about his work; did so according to original court order; refused to do so when too much was later ordered to be done and revealed; confined for contempt for failing to obey court order; spent one night in jail; released the next day when said commitment was reversed.
