Marie-Louise von Franz (1915–1998) was a Swiss Jungian analyst, classical philologist, and one of Carl Jung’s closest long-term collaborators. She met Jung in 1933 when she was 18, began analysis with him the following year, and worked closely with him until his death in 1961—especially on his studies of alchemy and symbolic psychology. She later became a training analyst and lecturer at the C. G. Jung Institute in Zürich.
She became particularly important for her studies of fairy tales, dreams, alchemy, archetypes, synchronicity, number, and the relationship between psyche and matter. Among her better-known books are The Interpretation of Fairy Tales, Alchemy, The Problem of the Puer Aeternus, The Grail Legend with Emma Jung, and especially Number and Time, where she explored possible connections between psychology, number, synchronicity, and physics.
That makes the quotation in your image much more interesting than an ordinary inspirational saying. The phrase about remaining within the “tension of opposites” until something new emerges is thoroughly Jungian. Jung used the idea of holding apparently irreconcilable opposites—conscious/unconscious, masculine/feminine, spirit/matter, rational/irrational—without prematurely choosing one side. From that sustained tension, he believed a third condition could emerge that was not simply a compromise between the first two.
And that is immediately reminiscent of something we have been encountering repeatedly in our Keely work:
opposed conditions → maintained relation → governing/equating condition → new resultant state.
It resembles our recent discussion of “concordants under antagonism” remarkably well. The opposites are not necessarily annihilated or forced into sameness; their difference can be maintained within a higher-order relationship.
I would not claim von Franz was describing Keelyan physics—she was speaking psychologically and symbolically—but the structural correspondence is striking. Her work on alchemy, the union of opposites, number, synchronicity, and psyche–matter relations might actually be worth examining alongside what we are uncovering in Keely’s charts.
